Steve Kilcoyne is principal of design agency Studio3.

Ever curious about technology Steve was an early adopter of the Mac, and soon won local and international industry attention, with his work being awarded for design, packaging and print.

However after 20 years of creating marcoms, annual reports and tight product illustrations, he wanted to explore a more natural and tangible expression of creativity. Art and community aide projects are now his full time endeavour. His art is collected by private and corporate entities both nationally and overseas.

His work has been described as “luxurious in colour”.

The works on display depict the deep impression made by the colours and texture of the Australian landscape.

In recent years Steve has been working in the medium of natural sand and ocre obtained from various parts of South Australia (all with permission of the land owner). After research he found the right binding agent from the building industry making the works robust.

This country invites exploration, journeying vast distances not only to be seen, but to be touched and worked.

The making of these pieces involved a full participation of the senses; in some cases a labour to find coloured ocre or rock to be crushed into fine dust.

Steve’s creative process is energetic, painting in broad sweeps of colour, applying materials directly onto canvas and blending to obtain tones and hues using palette knife or just his hands.

With the philosophy that form is subservient to colour and texture, this concept allows the viewer to participate in the work by using their recollection of experiences.

These works are not just visual they are tactile.

They are memories of places.
